RAIL PLOWING

ECI Rail Plow
ECI's Own Creation - The Rail Plow
In 1998, ECI designed and fabricated a rail plow using a track excavator mounted on a flatcar. The rail plow is towed with a locomotive as cable or conduit is plowed up to 4 feet into the ground adjacent to the tracks.

The 1998 project involved installation of two 1-1/4-inch-diameter innerducts along the New England Central Railroad (NECR) for a major long-distance telephone company. The plowing portion of the contract was completed ahead of schedule in 40 work days for an average daily plow length of 10,600 feet (in the ground at the specified depth).

The total distance of the contract was 96 miles. The innerduct was plowed to the specified depth for 80.5 miles (84%). When the total distance is adjusted for bridges, road crossings, culverts, manholes, and other areas where plowing was not allowed, the percentage of successful plowing increases to about 92%. The remaining unplowed portion consists of rock, boulders, and low clearance areas adjacent to the track.

Since completion of this project, ECI has plowed conduit for other major telecommunication projects and installed signal wires for New England Central Railroad and the Vermont Railway.

In 1998 ECI was granted a patent for the rail plow (US Patent #6,139,440, B1).
