Safety Focus of the Week: Gas Monitoring Instruments
ECI has several gas monitoring instruments for use in confined spaces and other potential hazardous environments, including:
- Four Gas Meter (O2, Explosive Gas, Carbon Monoxide, and Hydrogen Sulfide)
- Photo Ionization Detector (PID) – for detecting the presence of volatile organic compounds
- Drager Tube – for identifying the type and concentrations of a volatile organic compound
When using the 4-gas meter, the normal background levels should be:
O2 = 20.5 % LEL = 0 % CO = 0 ppm HS = 0
Permissible limits are:
O2 = 19.5 to 23.5 % LEL = 0 to 10 % CO = 0 to 35 ppm HS = 0 to 10 ppm
Any readings above the normal background should be a red flag warning that require further evaluation.
