Safety Focus of the Week: Compressed Gas Cylinders
Compressed gas cylinders are common in our shops, our job sites, and even at home. As you’d expect, there are many regulations that we need to consider in using, storing, handling, and transporting compressed gas cylinders.
In general, an inspection from a safety officer might include a check for the following:
- Cylinder Storage Areas:
- Protect from vehicles/equipment/sunlight/excessive heat/sparks/open flame
- Flammable Gas Separated from Oxygen (20 ft or 1/2 hr firewall)
- Separate Empty from full tanks
- Tanks are:
- Secured from Tipping,
- Stored Vertically,
- Valves Closed,
- Regulators Removed & Valve Cover On (unless stored in a cylinder cart)
- Proper labeling
- Signage for Storage Area: “Flammable Gas – No Smoking – No Open Flame”
- During Transport
- Store Vertically; Secure from Tilting;
- Remove Regulator; Close Valve; Valve Cover On
