Safety Focus of the Week: The Hazardous Communication Standard (Revisited)
OSHA has a Standard for Hazard Communication (1910.120) which contains the requirements for informing employees on the hazards for chemicals in the workplace, labeling, training, and MSDS sheets (now called Safety Data Sheets). An OSHA/VOSHA visit might very well involve an inspection of our job site chemicals, containers, labeling, Safety Data Sheets, and a review of our training for using the chemicals.
The Standard applies to any chemical which is known to be present in the workplace in such a manner that employees may be exposed under normal conditions of use or in a foreseeable emergency.
As part of this week’s safety focus, we need to verify that the chemicals on our job sites and our job trailers are all properly labeled and that we have a Safety Data Sheet for each. Also, please review the manufacturers instructions and the Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals used on your job site.
