Safety Focus of the Week: Safe Driving Practices
One of ECI’s Code of Conduct item is about safe driving practices:
- Drive safely, defensively, and courteously.
Safely involves:
- Inspecting and equipping your vehicle with the required safety components and settings
- Securing yourself and the cargo
- Clearing windshields, headlights, and tail lights
- Eliminating distractions and focusing on driving
- Driving at the speed suitable for the road conditions and not more than the posted speed limit
- Wait patiently for the best opportunities to pass slow motorist, cyclists, or pedestrians
Driving Defensively involves:
- Watching for upcoming situations with other motorist, cyclists, pedestrians, animals, or obstructions in the roadway
- Easing into zones where problems are likely
Driving Courteously involves:
- Allowing for aggressive drivers to go past
- Show professionalism as you are driving
- Provide a wide berth for pedestrians and cyclists
