Safety Focus of the Week: Accidents within a Construction Work Zone
Vehicle accidents are not uncommon in construction work zones. Narrow lanes, visual distractions, unattentive drivers, and other factors make construction work zones hazardous to workers, flaggers, and the traveling public. As workers, we need to make sure that our Traffic Control Plan (TCP) is compliant with MUTCD and well maintained. If an accident occurs, the flaggers (if part of the TCP) should immediately stop traffic in both directions to allow for assessment, stabilization, and response to the incident. In all cases, 911 should be notified of an accident in a work zone (or an assigned detail officer), in addition to the safety department.
