Safety Focus of the Week: Incident Response (Revisited)
Occasionally we are faced with an “incident”, such as an injury, vehicle/equipment accident, environmental spill, accidental damage to the work or private property, or possibly some other type of situation. We have a protocol for the response and follow-up to an incident in our Safety Manual. Obviously, prior to consulting that document, the crew should react to stabilize and secure the scene, provide any necessary first aid, and call 911 when appropriate. The Incident Response Manual is for the most part a discussion on the notifications and follow-up after such an incident.
Check out the document which includes some recent minor changes:
A Burlington Firefighter once told me at a post-incident review that we should call 911 if the thought enters our mind. That is: if you think it might be necessary, then just do it.
