Vice President – Heavy Civil and Rail
Benjamin H. MacKinney, P.E. joined Engineers Construction, Inc. (ECI) as an intern from 2006 to 2009 while in pursuit of an engineering degree and became a full-time ECI employee in 2011. Ben currently serves as the Heavy Civil and Rail Market Manager. This market group executes some of the most complex projects built in the region and nearly all of the engineering for these projects is performed by ECI employees under Ben’s leadership. Ben thrives on difficult technical projects requiring extensive planning, engineering analysis, and specialized equipment. Ben is also responsible for the management and maintenance of the extensive company equipment and vehicle fleet boasting a large inventory that includes numerous specialty equipment pieces. Ben is also responsible for managing the company’s trucking operations, dispatching, mechanic shops, and offsite yards. Ben serves as the Chair of the Equipment Committee and is a member of the ECI Senior Leadership Executive Group.
Ben graduated in 2009 from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, Ben served as a Structural and Civil Engineer working for AES Northeast in Plattsburgh, NY. Ben helped to develop the firm’s Structural Engineering services market presence while providing structural design and analysis on Wastewater Treatment Plants and other commercial and residential building projects. In 2010, Ben served as a Structural and Civil Engineer for Dubois & King, Inc. providing design and analysis on dam and building structurers projects.
In late 2011, Ben returned to ECI and served as a Project Engineer later progressing to a Superintendent providing leadership, planning, scheduling, and management on multiple heavy civil and railroad projects with crews of up to 30 men and contract values up to $15M. As Ben’s role has evolved from Project Engineer, General Superintendent, Market Manager, to a Vice President, he has built a strong team of professionals who have progressively proven their ability to build larger and more challenging projects.
Ben’s role as Heavy Civil and Rail Market Manager at ECI includes providing complete oversight to the Market Group. Responsibilities include setting expectations for Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Foreman, review and execution of awarded contracts, assigning project management, engineering, and supervisory teams on all new projects, coordinate with General Superintendents, Foreman, labor, and equipment dispatchers on general global needs for projects, establish and implement project management standards with respect to project administration, field coordination, cost management, client coordination, document/data management, preconstruction administration, review/approval of subcontractor agreements, monitoring metrics on all active projects, recruiting new staff, and conducting employee performance reviews.
Ben has a passion for companywide efficiency and loss control procedures, both internal and external. Ben also has built, maintains, and executes the Capitol Expenditures annual budget for the company.
Ben serves as the Chair of the Town of Duxbury Development Review Board while also serving on the Town’s Budget Committee. Ben maintains a Class B Commercial Driver’s License and has co-authored two publications: Anchored Hollow Bar Tangent Pile System for Underpinning and East Alburgh Swing Span Automation: Modernizing a 100-year-old Moveable Bridge, appearing in peer reviewed journal articles.
