ECI is a 100% employee owned heavy civil contractor. ECI specializes in civil construction and sitework, concrete construction, paving, bridges, railroad, and directional drilling.
ECI was established by registered professional engineers Alan Pidgeon and Craig Butterfield, in 1965. The business concept was to provide construction services beyond their engineering business which was established in the previous year as Engineers Incorporated of Vermont (EIV). Engineers Construction became a sister company to EIV. The early corporate history included the formation of a paving company (AC Paving) named for Alan and Craig. Craig’s ownership was bought out in the 1970s after the partners acquired another paving company in Florida. Craig and Alan separated with Craig taking the Florida company and Alan retained ECI and EIV in Vermont. EIV was sold in the 1980s and currently performs construction inspection services on highway projects that ECI builds. ECI was acquired in 2005 from Alan by sons Ken and Scott Pidgeon as equal partners. Under their leadership, ECI expanded its specialty services, fleet, and increased the size of the companies management team. In 2024 Ken and Scott sold ECI to its employees through a 100% Employee-Owned Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
